Born 1946 in Klagenfurt.
Grew up in Bleiburg (Southern Carinthia) in a musical environment. Later student of the "Realgymnasium" and the Conservatory Klagenfurt, where he studied piano and harmony
Autodidact on the saxophone, the bass and the accordion, playing folk- and dance music and singing in a choir were among his first musical activities.

Student of Jazz-Saxophone at the Academy of Music (Musikhochschule) in Graz (continued in 1973-75), Diploma with highest honors, winner of the "Würdigungspreis" from the Austrian Ministry of Science

1970 - 73
on tour with "Los Argentinos", an Argentinean Show-, Dance- and Jazz group, "learning by doing"
1975 Lectureship at the Jazz department of the "Musikhochschule" Graz

1978



Founds the Karlheinz Miklin Trio with Ewald Oberleitner (b) and Brüning von Alten (d), one of the first Saxophone-trios without chord instrument of the time.

1983

Head of the Jazz department (until 2000), Professor for "Saxophone - Jazz "(O.Univ.Prof.)
Elected Austrian jazz musician of the year ("Jazz Live"- Poll) (again 1984)

TV Festival All Stars Zagreb together with John Lewis, Benny Bailey, Ernie Wilkins...
First Tour with the "Trio Argentina", later extended to the "Quinteto Argentina"
Tours regularly in Europe and South America, so far ten LP/CD/DVD

Started appearances as band leader with musicians like Albert Mangelsdorff, Art Farmer, Enrico Rava, Horace Parlan, Mel Lewis, Kenny Washington, Barre Phillips, Chuck Israels...and singers like Sheila Jordan, Mark Murphy, Andy Bey, Michele Hendricks...
Initiator and director of the concert series "Graz Meeting" (until 2002), bringing together international guests with students and teachers of the Jazz Department Graz in over a hundred concerts
Founding of the "Karlheinz Miklin Quartet" with Harry Pepl (g), Ron Mc Clure (b), Billy Hart (d); from 1989 on with Fritz Pauer (p) and occasionally Victor Lewis or Adam Nussbaum (d)
